Carlson & Blakeman is proud to announce that Attorney Megan Cavanaugh will be speaking at the upcoming NE MCLE-accredited event on Powers of Attorney (POAs) for Immigrant Clients. This important discussion will highlight how POAs can serve as vital legal tools for immigrants navigating complex legal and financial matters in the U.S.

POAs help immigrant clients maintain stability and control over legal, financial, and personal matters during uncertain situations.

Here are key scenarios where a POA might be needed in Nebraska:

Detainment or Deportation Proceedings

  • An immigrant at risk of ICE detention or deportation may need a POA to grant a trusted family member or attorney the authority to handle their finances, property, and legal affairs while they are unavailable.

Childcare & Guardianship

  • A parent at risk of deportation can use a POA to grant temporary guardianship to a relative or friend, ensuring their children’s care and schooling continues without legal interruptions.

Property & Financial Management

  • An immigrant planning to travel abroad for an extended period may assign a POA to handle bank accounts, rental properties, business operations, or tax filings while they are away.

Medical Decision-Making

  • A POA for healthcare decisions allows a designated person to make medical choices if an immigrant becomes incapacitated due to an accident or illness and cannot communicate their wishes.

Business Operations

  • A business owner on a temporary visa or awaiting status approval may assign a POA to manage their business, sign contracts, or oversee payroll if they cannot be physically present.
